Argentina kept their men's team title at the ITTF-Americas Championships in Lima on 20 October, beating Brazil 3-2, while the United States won the women's team final 3-0 against Puerto Rico.
Horacio Cifuentes won both of his singles matches in the men's final and Santiago Lorenzo won the deciding fifth match, PingSunday reported, citing Argentina's government. The squad was Cifuentes, Lorenzo, Francisco Sanchi and Martín Bentancor, coached by Franco Piruzzi. Argentina had beaten Colombia 3-1 in the quarter-finals and the USA 3-2 in the semi-finals.
The team events matter beyond the medals: finalists qualify for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, held in the same city next year. The individual events, running to 25 October, are qualifiers for the ITTF World Championships Finals in Astana in 2027.
Eighteen nations are competing at the National Sports Village (VIDENA). Brazil's Hugo Calderano, world No.7, is chasing a seventh Americas singles title after reaching the semi-finals of WTT China Smash earlier this month. Puerto Rico's Adriana Díaz leads the women's draw, with Olympians including Kanak Jha and Lily Zhang (USA), Bruna Takahashi (Brazil) and Lorenzo and Cifuentes also in the singles.
Calderano is the defending champion: at the last edition in Rock Hill, USA, he beat Kanak Jha 4-1 in the final for his sixth title, a day after winning the mixed doubles with Bruna Takahashi. In Lima he opened by beating Colombia's Carlos Arcila in the round of 32, while Cifuentes beat Colombia's Sebastián Bedoya.
The doubles are also at the business end. In the men's semi-finals Cifuentes and Lorenzo play Chile's Nicolas Burgos and Gustavo Gomez, and Kanak Jha and Jishan Liang face Venezuela's Raymundo Medina and Carlos Rios. In the women's doubles the USA's Sally Moyland and Lily Zhang play Chile's Daniela Ortega and Paulina Vega. Singles quarter-finals are on Saturday 24 October, with finals on the last day.
